Shortage of paracetamol attributed to rejection of low quality imports

Mar 9, 2011 10:49:39 AM - itnnews.lk

The Health Minister attributes the shortage of paracetamol

to the rejection of the low quality standard stocks imported recently. He said the Drugs Manufacturing Corporation is willing to produce Sri Lanka’s requirements locally.

The Minister pointed out that that the problems in the quality of drugs imported and the non-arrival of stocks in time were the critical problems they had to face. As such, the Minister opined that the Government has taken a decision to extend the support needs to increase the local production of drugs.

The Minister was speaking at the launching of construction of the new Drugs Manufacturing Complex of Glaxo Smith Kline Ratmalana. Sri Lanka’s population uses about 1.5 million paracetamol tablets daily. Accordingly the annual local requirements exceed 500 million. The Minister revealed that the State Drugs Manufacturing Corporation was prepared to undertake its production locally.
