President invites the nation to build the village and ensure a better place for the farmer.

President Rajapaksa has emphasized that the people had not forgotten how those in the opposition in the past took the initiative of making the Western class the kings over the villagers. He said everyone should unite in the Government’s efforts of building the villages, handing over the reigns to the farmers.

The President said that the entire country should be united. The imperialists divided the nation in history. These differences had to be done away with. There should be sustainable peace in the country. The programme of the Government was to improve the economy of the family. In this respect the Government will be launching the one million Economic Units programme on the 12th of this month. Leadership should be given by the Pradeshiya Sabha, the Temple, the Kovil, the Church nd the Mosque to strengthen the housewife. The President queried as to the fate of the children if development was not mooted. It is for this reason that education was being developed. Other than defence, the President said that the highest allocations were made and were being made today for health and education. He underlined that he did considered it as an investment for the posterity and not as an expenditure.

The President was addressing activists of the United People’s Freedom Alliance of the Kandy District. It was organized at the President’s House in Kandy. A notable feature was the United National Party candidate of the Kadugannawa Urban Council Wilmot Gunaratne ditching the party and joining the Freedom Alliance. Further expressing his views, the President underlined that they would definitely be victorious in the Development drive as in the case of the humanitarian operations against the terrorists. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Ministers Johnston Fernando and Dilan Perera, Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake and Deputy Minister Abdul Cader also addressed the meeting. Many Parliamentarians were present.
