Sri Lanka’s deep-thinking and streetwise captain Mahela Jayawardene is another top player who has joined the queue is saying the 2011 World Cup is "wide open".
"It is one anyone can win," he said on the eve of Sri Lanka’s World Cup Group A World Cup game against Zimbabwe on Thursday. "New Zealand took their chances (against Pakistan) and played the way they know how to. It explains how not one team can go in a favourites."
He suggested that Sri Lanka rated Zimbabwe as a side and how no game can be considered as an easy one as there were far too many areas and where teams show improved form as well as cause a few surprises.
Sri Lanka return to Pallekele for the first time since a waterlogged third Test against the West Indies last December resulted in a tied series that was heavily affected by rain.
Jayawardene though said he had some experience of the venue and its playing conditions in a domestic game and found the surface to be in good condition and different to the game against West Indies. The match though, was played on a different pitch.
