The need for a strong opposition has been emphasized. However Parliamentarians pointed out that the weak opposition would suffer its 19th major defeat at this Local Government election.
Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said the election clearly depicts the fate of Ranil Wickreamsinghe. The intention of the UNP is to seek public votes not to work for their benefit. It is a power struggle between Ranil and Sajith Premadasa. This is clearly displayed at the village level. One group says they are for Sajith Premadasa while another say they favour Ranil. They also said that some are claiming that Ranil would be ousted after the polls. The Minister said that the UNP would suffer a serious defeat at the polls and it would be the 19th defeat.
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka pointed out that some were talking about Egypt. Although Hosni Mubarak ruled Egypt from 1981 after Anwar Sadat, he had to go home within 15 days due to protests staged by the people. But the United National Party Leader after suffering 19 losses is still remaining within the party despite revolts by the people. It is he who talking about Hosni Bubarak. The Minister claimed that nobody was aware of the amendment introduced in 1995 for him to be the lifetime leader.
