Sri Lanka’s Railway Passenger Transport Service reaches another mile stone.
Recently, the rail track from Galle to Matara was modernized so that trains could operate at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour. It was the first stage of the project which covers the costal track from Colombo Fort to Matara. Another feature has been introduced. It is the operation of the latest power-sets. A new power-set was introduced from Matara under the patronage of Minister Kumara Welgama.
The function was held at the Matara Railway Station. The first three power-sets imported under an Indian line of credit, has been introduced to service. It is equipped with all modern facilities. These were brought to Sri Lanka under the programme of importing 20 power-sets from India. One power-set will replace the Ruhunu Kumari train while the others are to be added to long distance trains. Expressing his views at the function, Minister Kumara Welgama said they have drawn up plans for the maintenance of a joint Rail-bus Passenger Service for the convenience of the commuters.
India’s High Commissioner in Colombo Ashok K. Kantha. Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Deputy Minister Wijaya Dahanayake, several Politicos and Government Officials were present.
