A judge has declared a mistrial in the case of an Anderson man charged with shooting and injuring a police officer.
Jurors deliberated for several hours Thursday before telling Circuit Court Judge Lawton McIntosh they could not reach a verdict in the case of Shantiago Smith.
Smith was arrested in July 2007 and charged with shooting Anderson Officer David Fikes. Investigators said Fikes was responding to a robbery call at Churchill's Pub and was shot by a man behind the building.
Fikes was wearing a bulletproof vest. He was released from the hospital after treatment for gunshot wounds to his arm.
Smith testified he was at home in bed when the shooting happened.
