The government has relaxed restrictions on Tamil Nadu fishermen and has granted permission for them to visit the Katchathivu Island on March 19 and 20.
A spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Navy told the media that the restrictions will be lifted for the Tamil Nadu fishermen to visit the island on March 19 and 20 to participate in religious activities.
A festival for St. Anthony is scheduled to be held on the island on these two days.
According to the Sri Lanka Navy, the laws regarding fishing in Sri Lankan waters will remain, but the Indian fishermen will be permitted to visit the island to participate in the religious celebrations.
Fishermen and fisher families from Tamil Nadu reportedly take a four hour boat ride to visit the Katchathivu Island annually to participate in the religious celebrations.
