Yvonne De Silva
Yvonne de Silva, my friend of a lifetim was taken away from me.
She was one of a happy-go-lucky gang of six, of the primary staff of Good Shepherd Convent, Colombo 13.
Of our gang, Naomi, Monica, Fanny, Mavis, Yvonne and Ranji, Yvonne was the most serious-minded, so that we were afraid to even share a joke with her, not knowing what her reaction would be.
Having lost her mother when she was still young, Yvonne was the mother to her three bothers until they settled in their own homes. She was a friend and a mother to me too, whenever I sought her advice.
She was a very exacting teacher and I am sure many Shepherdians must be proud to have gone through her hands.
Yvonne’s husband Ignatius (Iggie, to us) brought a lot of life into her personality and even to the rest of us in the gang. The Lord blessed Yvonne and Iggie with three lovely children, who look after them to the best of their ability.
The most precious asset that Yvonne and Iggie have is the beautiful little chapel in their home. I am sure they have prayed for me there. Dear Lord, receive my true friend Yvonne, with loving arms, the last of the gang.
