The Court has ordered detention of two suspects who are alleged to have obtained ransoms from expatriate Tamils on behalf of the LTTE.
The two suspects were arrested in January on a complaint made by an expatriate Tamil in Canada who arrived in Sri Lanka. The complaint said that when he arrived in Jaffna to attend a wedding he was asked to pay a ransom of 15,000 Canadian Dollars. He was threatened with death in case the ransom was not paid. Accordingly 1.8 million rupees was paid by the complainant to the suspects. Considering the request made by the CID that the suspects need to be further interrogated regarding the funds collected, the Magistrate’s Court granted permission for the detention of the suspects for further interrogation.
