Economy was developed amidst challenges says President

Mar 14, 2011 11:42:19 AM - itnnews.lk

The Economy has been developed amidst local as well as foreign challenges.

The President has called on the people to be united in creating a prosperous future. The President said when the global economy was collapsing the economy of this country was built. While there was a food shortage in the world, the farmers in this country provided rice to the people. While the Government was facing this crisis some went abroad and requested not to grant aid to the government and cut the GSP concession. The GSP was cut but the Government faced the situation. He said that during the Presidential Election a kilogram of rice was sold at 110 rupees, but the situation has now changed. He said the Government has been providing a fertilizer subsidy to the farmer. Now it has been extended to the vegetable farmers as well. He said the Government has taken a decision with regard to the filling forms and taking numerous signatures of officials before obtaining the fertilizer. The President said hereafter the farmers have only to go to the shop and ask for the fertilizer. He said that is how the Government is developing agriculture.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa expressed these views addressing the party activists at a meeting held in the Polonnaruwa District under the series themed Sapiri Gamak- Supiri Ratak. The President said that the self sufficient economic system of this country was destroyed due to certain activities of the past governments. He said that the present government has taken over the responsibility of rebuilding the economy.

Meanwhile the President addressing the UPFA activists at the Mahaweli Grounds in Dehiattakandiya yesterday said that those who were born in villages have a feeling for the village.

He said the development of this country was confined only to the Western Province earlier. Every Leader, party and the governments in the past developed only Colombo as the economy was centered around Colombo. The villages did not have any facilities. He said that he was born in a village called Giruwaya and therefore he has a feeling that one should live in the village and serve it. He said that is why they said that the entire country should be developed instead of one province. He said that the village development programme was launched under this policy.

The President pointed out that the facilities that were not available to them are enjoyed by today’s children in villages. His aim is to bring success to the rural children. The President stressed that these children will open new paths not only locally but internationally as well. He said that the country is in need of an opposition that can make a strong impression in parliament instead of betraying the motherland from abroad. He stressed that the time has come for the opposition to understand their responsibilities. The President emphasized that all should come together to steer the country towards a self sufficient economy. A number of Ministers and Parliamentarians addressed the gathering.
