JVP puts Jayawardenepura University into chaos

Mar 15, 2011 11:06:31 AM - itnnews.lk

The Sri Jayawardenapura University is in disarray following a fear psychosis created by the JVP. A University lecturer and three security officers suffered injuries in an attack unleashed by the students.

A group of students who behaved in an unruly manner had assaulted a lecturer and three security officers including the Chief Security Officer when they intervened to disperse a group of aggressive students. It is reported that the students who unleashed the attack had attempted to persuade a group of new students to engage in their political activities. Giving his views Vice Chancellor of the Sri Jayawardenapura University Dr. N.L.A. Karunaratne said that some parents contacted him and told that the JVP was forcibly taking their children for anti-government activities. He informed a security officer of this incident and to take relevant measures. There had been a discussion by a small group close to the Science Faculty. He said the group comprised between 45 and 50 members. When the security officers arrived at the location, some had fled and some had remained there. They were reported to be leaders of the group who always showed that they were not afraid of Lecturers. Their view was that the Lecturers should do what they say. The Security Officers and the Lecturers had asked for their identity cards. It is mandatory for undergraduates to possess the identity card and when called for, it should be produced.

Dr. Karunaratne pointed out that they had information that some outsiders were getting ready to create disturbances within the University premises. He was later informed that there was a person without an identity card. Thereafter measures were taken to hand him over to the Police considering him as an outsider. He said there was a monk from the Hali Ela area who had been continuously engaged in anti-disciplinary activities and who had been suspended from classes. However, he used to enter the premises flouting the law. The Vice Chancellor said he too was with the group yesterday which assaulted this Lecturer. It was a pathetic situation.

Senior Lecturer of the Entrepreneurship Study Division Shyaman Udyanga and the security officers including its chief Nimal Chandrasiri who were assaulted by students affiliated to Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna have been admitted to the Colombo South Hospital and are presently receiving treatment. Describing the incident Senior Lecturer Shyaman Udayanga queried whether this was the novel change the JVP expected to take place.
