Firefighters putting out a grass fire in North on Monday afternoon discovered a body in the burn area.
Crews from the North Volunteer Fire Department received a call about a structure fire on Magenta Drive around 5:15 p.m., Chief Greg Gambrell. Upon reaching the scene, they discovered a grass fire that had grown out of control and burned an old dwelling being used as a storage shed, he said.
After getting the fire under control about 30 minutes later, they also found a body, he said.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office and the county coroner's office are investigating.
Gambrell did not have any details about the body. He said the fire likely started by someone attempting to burn off grass.
