Work on the second phase of upgrading the Coastal rail track will begin in July.
As a result the Transport Ministry has decided to close the railway line from Kalutara South to Galle with effect from the first of July. The railway track will be closed for seven months up to January 31. The 40-kilometer railway track will be closed for upgrading under the condition that the construction will be definitely completed during the stipulated time frame. The Transport Ministry plans to operate a joint rail-bus service from Kalutara to Galle during this period. Minister Kumara Welgama said that a fine will be levied for every delayed day.
