The G.C.E. Ordinary Level results have been released. At a news briefing held at the Department of Examinations today, it was revealed that it is the first time in history that a high percentage had succeeded in the Examination held in December last year.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that 62 percent of students who sat the G.C.E ordinary level examinations last year had qualified for higher studies. 61.6 percent had passed in Maths for the first time. The number which had succeeded in science is 59.8 percent and in English it was 41.4 percent. The Minister revealed that 3,059 candidates had secured nine A passes. This, he said, indicates the highest level in the standard of results and the quality of education received. He said a major contribution had been made by the School Principals and teachers. He appreciated their dedication towards this end.
Commissioner General for Examinations Anura Edirisinghe said Results of about 542,000 candidates were being posted to internet. They do not expect to summon Principals to the Department tomorrow being the elections day. Principals of the Colombo and Jayawardenepura zones can visit the Department on Friday the 18th and secure the results. He said that action was being taken to mail the results sheets of other schools numbering 8,500 tonight. Results of the private candidates numbering about 50,000 would be printed tonight and issued with the results sheets.
