The United National Party lost its grip on 19 Local Councils following yesterday’s poll.
The United Peoples Freedom Alliance secured power of the 19 Local Bodies which were hitherto under the administration of the UNP. It won only nine local bodies at yesterday’s election. The UNP managed to cling on to power of the Kuliyapitiya, Gampola, Kadugannawa, Kalutara and Colombo Seethawakapura Urban Councils. It also won the Bandarawela Municipal Council. The Party also managed to take control of the Passara Pradeshiya Sabha in Badulla and the Pahatha Hewaheta and Lahugala Pradeshiya Sabhas in Badulla.
The Freedom Alliance succeeded in taking control of the Wattala Mabola Urban Council, the Peliyagoda Urban Council, the Biyagama Pradehsiya Sabha, the Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha and the Mirigama Pradeshiya Sabha which were hitherto strongholds of the UNP.
The Freedom Alliance took control of the Kataragama Pradehaiya Sabha which was under the control of UNP for 21 years.
The Freedom Alliance secured power of the Palindanuwara Pradeshiya Sabha of the Kalutara District.
The UNP also lost the Beruwala Urban Council. It was won by the Freedom Alliance.
It is the Freedom Alliance which took control of the Panadura Urban Council.
The Patha Dumbara Pradeshiya Sabha in the Kandy District, a stronghold of the UNP has been won by the Freedom Alliance. It also took control of the Malimbada Pradehiya Sabha of the Matara District.
The UNP also lost the Naula Pradehiya Sabha in the Matale District. It was won by the Freedom Alliance.
The Laggala Pallepola Pradehiya Sabha of Matale, another UNP stronghold was lost. It’s power was secured by an Independent Group.
The Freedom Alliance won the Horana Urban Council.
It is the Freedom Alliance which grabbed power of the UNP from the Badulla Ridimaliyadda Pradeshiya Sabha and the Welimada Pradeshiya Sabha.
The UNP also lost power of the Kantale Pradeshiya Sabha. It was won by the Freedom Alliance
The two other local bodies lost by the UNP in the Trincomalee District were Kinniya Urban Council and the Pradeshiya Sabha. These were won by the Freedom Alliance.
