The governing UPFA led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa has won a majority of the local government bodies at the local government elections.
The UPFA managed to secure power in 205 local bodies from 234 in which elections were held.
The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) has recorded the next highest victory at the local government elections by winning 12 local government bodies, including the Mannar Urban Council, Pradeshiya Sabha, Vavauniya Pradeshiya Sabha, Manathai East Pradeshiya Sabha, Trincomalee Urban Council and Naveenthanveli Pradeshiya Sabha.
The main opposition UNP has managed to secure power in nine local government bodies.
Among the local government bodies won by the UNP are Kuliyapitiya Urban Council, Gampola Urban Council, Bandarawela Municipal Council, Kadugannawa Urban Council and Kalutara Urban Council.
Svereal local government bodies in the Gampaha District that were earlier held by the UNP have been won by the governing UPFA at yesterday’s elections.
Meanwhile, the SLMC has won four local government bodies, while the National Congress has obtained two councils.
