It was on the Medin Full Moon Day that the Buddha, along with 1000 disciples led by Minister Kaludai trekked from Veluwanaramaya in Rajagriha, to Kimbulwathpura to meet his father, King Suddodhana, relatives and friends of the Sakhya Clan, into which he was born as Prince Siddhartha. It was in the eighth year after he attained enlightenment. The Nigrodharama temple was offered to the Buddha on such a day.
The Poya Day Dhamma Sermon at the Temple Trees was held under the patronage of the President. The Dhamma sermon was delivered by Ven. Polpithimukalane Pannasiri Thera. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa was amongst a large number of people who participated.
The Poya Day programme of the ITN ‘Savanak Ras’ was telecast live from Wevurukannala Raja Maha Vihara in Dikwella. The ‘Buddha Rashmi’ programme of the Lakhanda Radio was held at the Methsisila Vishuddharama temple at Soraboraweva.
