The Puttalam power plant is geared to join the power battle to provide electricity to the country.
The coal power plant that will be inaugurated on Tuesday was initiated under a concept of President Rajapaksa. It is a notable feature that the successfully completed first phase is also being inaugurated by him. It will generate 900 megawatts to the national grid in two phases. The first phase will release 300 megawatts. The power plant was constructed without causing damage to the environment with Chinese concessionary credit as well as funds from the Sri Lankan government. Sea water is being specially treated to be used in the plant without tapping ground water. The Puttalam power plant marks a watershed in the development battle.
