The World Buddhist Congress has got underway in Sri Lanka.
It was inaugurated under the patronage of President at the International Buddhist Centre in Pallekele. The World Buddhist Congress is being held to mark the 2600th Sambuddatva Jayanthi. As a result of a discussion held between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh it was decided to celebrate the 2600th Sambuddatva Jayanthi on a grand scale. Arrangements were made to hold the Buddhist Congress in Sri Lanka with assistance from the Indian High Commission and the Indian Cultural Centre. The World Buddhist Congress which got underway under the patronage of the President will come to an end tomorrow. Six representatives each from India and Sri Lanka participate in the conference while one representative each from Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia also participate. The Anunayake of the Malwatta Chapter Ven. Niyangoda Wijithasiri thera, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratna, Ministers and Parliamentarians Participated in the inaugural function.
