The Indian media has reported that the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu has released a manifesto for the forthcoming state assembly elections, in which the party promises that the Katchathivu island will be retrieved from Sri Lanka.
The DMK has reportedly pledged to take measures for protecting the lives of fishermen and retrieving Katchathivu island from Sri Lanka to safeguard the livelihood of fishermen.
Released by party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, it has said the DMK government would urge the center to retrieve the Katchatheevu, an islet ceded to Sri Lanka by India by way of an accord in 1974.
The Times of India has reported that the 64-page manifesto released at the state party headquarters has also promises 35kg rice for below the poverty line people, free wet grinders or mixies for poor ration card holders, promising a slew of freebies like its 2006 manifesto.
In the 2006 assembly elections, the DMK had promised free colour TVs for poor people, two acre land for landless farmers, rice at Rs two per kg and waiver of Rs 7,000 crore cooperative bank loans to farmers.
