The Sri Lanka Navy has said that measures would be taken to improve the relations between the Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen.
Speaking during the annual St. Anthony’s feast held on the Kachchathivu Island, Commander of the Northern Naval Area Rear Admiral Susith Weerasekara has said that the feast of St. Anthony is being organized on the Island together with the Sri Lanka Navy in order to build the relations between the Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen.
Thousands of Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen participate in annual St. Anthony’s feast held on the Kachchathivu Island.
The Sri Lankan government removed restrictions on Indian fishermen to enable them to enter the Sri Lankan waters to participate in the religious celebrations.
Rear Admiral Weerasekara has said that Indian fishermen stray into Sri Lankan waters and engage in unlawful fishing and the industry has therefore faced many threats.
However, he has added that steps would be taken to strengthen the relations between Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen.
