A new market complex in place of St. John’s fish market has been constructed in Peliyagoda.
The St. John’s fish market catered to the needs of the Colombo consumers as well as traders for several decades had become outdated due to inadequate space and facilities to meet the current demand.
The new fish market complex has been constructed on a proposal brought by President Rajapaksa during his tenure as the Fisheries Minister. The new fish market complex built on a large extent of land near the Peliyagoda town consists of 276 stalls. It is built within two years at the cost of 1.9 billion rupees. The New Central Market Complex which will be inaugurated on the 26th will provide a suitable environment for the consumers in the developing city.
