The Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Ministry has launched a programme to produce handicraft and other goods using fiber extracted from the stems of the plantain trees.
The Ministry is looking at promoting this programme as a cottage industry in the country.
The programme is being sponsored by the UNDP and assisted by the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka.
The project is to be implemented in the Jaffna, Ampara, and Ratnapura districts in the initial stage and would later expand to other districts.
It has been estimated that there are over 52,000 hectares of banana cultivation in Sri Lanka on a commercial scale in addition to small scale household plantations.
