Mar 22, 2011 11:06:42 AM - itnnews.lk

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to appoint Heads to local government institutions sans considering the preference votes. At a media briefing in Colombo today, it was revealed that the gazette notification containing the names of Heads of Local Bodies would be issued on the 28th of this month.

Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that the Central Working Committee yesterday decided that the heads and deputies Chairman of Local Bodies would be given not on the basis of the preference votes they polled, but on their capabilities, abilities, political experiences, education, behavior at the elections and the work they had discharged if they had been in power. The Minister also said that their relations with the public will also be taken into consideration. The Minister added that during the meeting of the Central Committee, it was also agreed to consider whether any allegations had been levelled against them. It was also agreed to get the recommendations of the electoral organizers in respect of the members to be appointed to these designations.

Minister Susil Premajayantha pointed out that the Elections Chief had informed in writing to the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance to appoint Heads for the 205 Local Bodies won by the party. Accordingly he said the names of those to be appointed as Heads of these Local Bodies would be handed over to the Returning Officers of the respective districts within two days. He revealed that by the 28th of this month, the names of the Heads of the Local Councils and the elected members would be announced in a gazette notification.
