The 23rd Annual Conference of the United Nations World tourism Organisation opened in Colombo today. The theme is “Mainstreaming Tourism in the Media.”
The Conference is indeed timely because it coincides with an economic watershed towards prosperity of the Sri Lankans. More than 400 delegates from 154 countries are attending the conference. Among them are Tourism Ministers of the region. The opening took place under the patronage of Deputy Minister Lakshmn Yapa Abeywardena and Secretary General of the UN World Tourism Organisation Dr. Talab Rifai.
The delegates are expected to be taken on a tour of attractive places of the island. A programme is also being organized in the Jetliner vessel. Representatives of many media institutions are also participating.
Addressing the gathering Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene recollected that that Sri Lanka protected the tourists even during the conflict in spire of all adverse media reports and they were their strongest and credible communicators who sent tourists continuously to the island, which is gifted with unbelievable amount of diversity in compactness.
