Notice: Insect-watchers needed

Mar 24, 2011 12:12:00 AM - thestate.com
State forestry officials are asking for the public’s help in tracking the upcoming emergence of millions of cicadas after their 13-year naps.

The S.C. Forestry Commission has added a page on its website so that “citizen scientists” may report the rise of the insects in their parts of South Carolina.

The address of the page is www.trees.sc.gov/idcicadas.htm.

Forestry officials would like citizen scientists to provide the location of the emergence, provide the date the person first saw or heard the critters, list any damage the cicadas have caused and provide any other helpful information.

The insects will dig their way from underground in late April, May or June after the ground temperature has risen to a consistent 64 degrees, scientists say.
