The Higher Education Minister has emphasised that the only solution for the Sabaragamuwa students who are suspended from attending lectures is to seek an apology.
Minister S.B. Dissanayake underscored that there was no room for any form of ragging in Universities. No student who is involved in the ragging of other students at the Sabaragamuwa University will be pardoned while the integrity of the campus will be protected even if a thousand students have to be expelled. Measures were in place to conduct investigations into the matter to arrest anyone who is involved in this sort of activity. The Minister underlined that the Universities will not be run as the undergraduates wanted and to meet their ends.
Minister Dissanayake was addressing a media conference in Colombo today. More than 50 students of the Sabaragamuwa University have been suspended. They have been punished for engaging in ragging and other forms of irregularities.
Vice Chancellor of the Sabaragamuwa University Prof. Manhinda S. Rupasinghe briefed on the student unrest in the campus. He said that according to powers vested in his, he would take measures to legally proscribe the Students Council of the University.
