Metro City Corporation for Greater Colombo

Mar 24, 2011 11:05:21 AM - itnnews.lk

Government has decided to setup a Metropolitan City Corporation on behalf of the Colombo development drive. Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that the Cabinet reached this decision on a proposal submitted by Minister A.L.M. Athaullah

The Minister said that to assist the five local bodies namely the Colombo Municipal Council, the Dehiwela- Mt Lavinia Municipal Council, the Sri-Jayawardenapura – Kotte Municipal Council, Kolonnawa Urban Council and Kotikawatta- Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha will come under its purview. The Minister pointed out that the existing five local bodies will continue to function through the Corporation which will streamline the local administration and build their capacity and capabilities with required powers,

The Minister told the Cabinet news briefing that the City Corporation will be headed by a City Governor appointed by the President and all Heads and the Deputy Heads of the five local bodies and a nominated member from the opposition of each local authority will constitute the composition of this Corporation.

In response to q query by a journalist with regard to opposition charges that the government was attempting to set up a Rajapaksa administration abolishing the local bodies in the City, the Minister said that such things cannot be done in a democratic country. There is a President elected through a people’s mandate and also a Parliament elected by the people. It is also the same with local bodies. As such, the Minister said that no one can administer them according to personal wishes. This, he said was a political argument.
