An 86-year-old U.S. Army veteran was awarded the Bronze Star at Ft. Jackson for saving a wounded comrade on an Italian battlefield 67 years ago in World War II.
The medal, given to former Pvt. Henry Scheussler, at post headquarters earlier in the week, was for saving a fellow soldier who was wounded on a minefield at the Battle of Anzio in February 1944.
In January, 1944, Allies established a beachhead at Anzio on Italys western coast. Although they were supposed to move inland after landing, Allied generals blundered and decided to consolidate their positions.
The delay gave the Germans time to fortify high ground surrounding the beachhead. Consequently, the Allies failed to break through their lines until May. Thousands of U.S. soldiers died between January and May of 1944 while trying to break through the German lines.
The base announced the award today.
