A lit cigarette left on a couch caused a fire on Hydrick Street in north Columbia that destroyed a one-story brick home, said Columbia fire chief Aubrey Jenkins.
He estimated the damage at more than $70,000.
The fire, which was called in by a neighbor, started around 12:30 p.m. today, Jenkins said.
No one was home at the time of the fire, but four people have been displaced.
The house is about a half mile south of Columbia College in a residential neighborhood.
