Update, 10:35 a.m.
The S.C. Forestry Commission said at a news conference this morning the large McClellanville wildfire is still only 95 percent contained this morning, with the main attack by some 40 commission personnel in the "troublesome" bay where the fire began. Mutual aid fire departments are patrolling for hot spots elsewhere.
The commission is predicting full containment today or tomorrow under improving weather conditions of lighter winds and higher humidity. The size of the fire has not grown beyond the 2,600 acres it covered Thursday.
Community members have been donating food, drinks, bug spray and other items to support firefighters.
The fire has cost $1.5 million to $2 million in timber, a range that could vary depending on how much burned timber can be salvaged and how many damaged trees survive in the coming year, state forester Gene Kodama said.
