The President has inaugurated a Buddhist Art Gallery at the Gangarama temple.
The Art Gallery which consists of ancient as well as contemporary temple paintings was inaugurated under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning. The gallery depicts the spread of the tradition of temple paintings in history. It was created on a concept of the President. Around 300 paintings that depict various eras are displayed in the gallery. The paintings of the inner walls of the Mihintale Chetiya as well as Bellanwila and Kelaniya temples are also on display. Expressing his views the President said that the maximum assistance will be extended for such galleries which display temple paintings that have been hidden from our eyes, awakening the people to the historic identity. Opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe also addressed the gathering. Chief incumbent of the Gangarama temple Ven Galaboda Gnannissara Thera, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge, Creator of the Buddhist Art Gallery Dr. Daya Hewapathirana were amongst those who participated in the occasion.
