The Agricultural Department has said that the yield of the Maha paddy harvest in the Polonnaruwa District has been reduced by almost half of the expected yield due to the recent floods.
The Department has stated that the usual 100 bushels of paddy yielded from an acer of paddy land in the Polonnaruwa District has been reduced to around 40-50 bushels.
According to Deputy Director of Agriculture, P. Sisira Kumara, the harvest from certain fields was even less than that.
He has told the media that the decline in the harvest has been caused by the recent floods and heavy rains experienced in the area.
However, statistics state that the total acreage of paddy lands cultivated in the Polonnaruwa District this Maha season is 150,000 acres.
