Filing for the Columbia City Council District 2 race opened at 8:30 this morning, and Josh Stroman is the first to file for the seat vacated by E.W. Cromartie.
City Council members had scheduled an April 6 election to replace Cromartie, who resigned last month after he was charged with not paying federal income taxes.
But a panel of three federal judges stopped that election, saying it violated the federal Voting Rights Act.
The new election is set for July 13.
Filing to fill the remaining two years in Cromartie's District 2 term closes May 13.
Seven candidates had filed for the April 6 election, including Stroman. While those candidates will have to file again to run in the July election, city officials have said they would refund the candidates? first filing fees.
