Lexington County earthen dam at risk of failure
Mar 30, 2011 6:15:00 PM - thestate.com
Lexington County emergency workers this afternoon dug a makeshift spillway around one edge of an earthen dam in Irmo to reduce the chances of it breaking and flooding a dozen or more houses below it.
The dam, holding back water swollen by recent rains, has a small leak, Lexington County Emergency Management chief Bruce Rucker said.
The dam is near Nursery Road.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, officials said they did not believe the dam was in danger of immediate failure, but they have warned residents to be on standby and be ready to evacuate.
