Work is in progress in relation to the Population and Housing Census. This year’s census would cover all 25 districts of the country after a lapse of 30 years.
The last census in the country was held in the year 1981 which was confined to only 18 Districts of the country. The Department of Census and Statistics has started planning activities related to the next Census of Population and Housing. The programme will be carried out in three phases – preparation of maps, listing of buildings and finally the count. The preparation of maps is already completed and the listing of buildings will be concluded by the end of next month. Director General of the Department of Census and Statistics Suranjana Vidyaratne said the support of the public for the Grama Niladharis is vital in this respect. The label, which will be pasted in houses and buildings should not be removed until the census is completed.
Briefing the media at the Information Department today, she said if such a label is not put up in a house or building, even at the end of next month, it should be brought to the notice of the Grama Niladharis of the respective area. She said that this would be the 14th census to be carried out in the country
