A Lexington County jury Thursday convicted a 28-year-old man of numerous charges involving a particularly violent 2008 home invasion in Batesburg-Leesville.
Gregory Velez, of Lexington, was sentenced to 25-years in prison by Judge Knox McMahon following the verdict.
Velez was one of four heavily-armed men who entered a Batesburg-Leesville home on Aug. 13, 2008. They had an assault rifle, a shotgun, and two handguns and wore stocking masks.
Velez and the others kicked in the door, tied up a man and a woman inside and stole jewelry and cash. The invaders beat the man so badly he required medical attention. Three children in the house werent harmed.
Minutes after the home invasion, the four men were caught by Batesburg police in the area of the crime. The stolen jewelry was recovered from them, and officers quickly located the weapons and money in a wooded area near the home.
