Zoo sets spring break attendance record

Spring break and sunny weather helped Riverbanks Zoo set a one-week attendance record last week, when 63,513 guests passed through the gates.
The attendance from April 5 through Sunday broke the record set during spring break of 2002. The numbers were up in 2002 because it was the first spring break after the opening of the renovated Birdhouse and the Ndoki Forest exhibits for elephants and gorillas.
The crowds caused some backups on I-126 and long lines at the ticket booths, said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks. Zoo officials are pushing local leaders to approve a construction bond that, among other projects, would reconfigure the entrance to allow for more ticket booths and easier entry.
