Protests have mounted over a statement made by former cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga to a group of foreign media personnel. He had made this statement to media personnel of a leading TV channel in India.
Arjuna Ranatunga said he kept away from giving any advice to the team as the President was doing so. As such he said he stayed out giving any advice to the team.
Former Sri Lanka Cricket Board Chief and Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala opined that Mr. Ranatunga had made a statement that advice in relation to cricket was given by the President. He said the statement made by Mr. Ranatunge is unreasonable. When taking into consideration particularly the past one and a half to two years, the Sports Minister, Former Ministers, members of the Cricket Control Board and all others contributed to the building of stadiums and seeking grants as well as building the required infrastructure. In this respect they had to constantly seek the advice of the President. The Parliamentarian said the President was very much concerned of the World Cup and gave due consideration to it. As such it is improper to make statements undermining a leader who had been democratically elected and respected worldwide. He added that it does not suit a civilized society.
