Dam no longer a threat to Irmo area homes

Lexington County officials say there’s no longer any threat that a dam on a pond in a neighborhood near Irmo will fail.
A trench cut through the dam allowed enough water to run out of the five-acre pond to relieve pressure that could have broken it, officials said today.
“Everything from the standpoint of public safety is fine,” county public safety director Bruce Rucker said.
The 51-year-old pond in the Coldstream area near Nursery Hill Road is upstream of as many as 18 homes that could be flooded if the dam broke.Tim Flach
