D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo 7, a trend setter among the education institutes in Sri Lanka celebrated its 44th Birthday recently at the main college hall with the participation of many religious devotees, parents, children and well wishers at an all night pirith ceremony to invoke blessings on the school. It was followed by an almsgiving to the members of the clergy and religious activities by all other communities.
D.S. Senanayake College which is one of the premiere educational institutes in Sri Lanka was established on February 10, 1967 under the stewardship of R.I.T. Alles. The school has many achievements to its credit both in the academic and non academic fields locally and internationally. It stands as a truly multi ethnic, multi religious college which has proudly created an unblemished and prestigious record of excellence in academic, sports and community leadership through highly innovative and patriotic individuals.
D.S. Senanayake College is a parent built school as the parents contribute all funds for development work.
The primary sector of the school, which is categorised by the Ministry of Education as a model primary in headed by Nimali Kuruppu. Her unstinted co-operation, guidance, patience, tolerance, personal sacrifice, devotion and inspiring attention towards the children have been appreciated by both the staff and parents.
In the 44th Birthday message to the parents the Principal stated that the school would focus its attention on a new five-year plan for the development of academic and extra curricular activities. With the implementation of the plan D.S. Senanayake College will not be second to any leading schools in the island in producing not only good results in studies, but also in sports.
This year the school is planning to implement the Japanese 5s concept. It will help the school to be more productive in education, maintain consistent quality, be cost effective, ensure accuracy in delivery, be safe for teachers to work and maintain high morale.
With the active participation of the OBA and School Development Society the new Japanese concept will help to improve efficiency in all school activities, says the Principal.
D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo 7 has all modern facilities for students such as a swimming pool, gymnasium, playground, state of art IT room, and a college hall to accommodate 2000 people among other features.
The grand vision of the school for year 2020 includes an old boy occupying a leadership position in the UNO, producing a scientific inventor and probably an Olympic medalist. The vision gives prominence to sports and science as essentials for the future. “There in no such word called impossible in our school vocabulary,” says Principal D.M.D. Dissanayake.
