Royal Survive Josephian Fightback

Royal College Colombo survived a strong fightback by  St.Joseph’s college to scrape out a 38 points to 31 win in their season opener played at the Royal Sports Complex.
The boys from Darley Road came back strongly in the latter part of the second half giving the Royalists a scare to turn the score from 35-10 to 38-31 at the final whistle.
It was the royalists who drew first blood in the 4th minute of the game when their fly half arshard jamaldeen put over an easy penalty. Ten minutes later jamaldeen was on target again when he added three more points to the score board, scores were 6-0 and it only took a few minutes more for the royalists to score their first try of the match through their wing three quarter Nipun weerasinghe.
The Joesphians struck back immediately when their skipper Malintha Zoysa rose to the occasion to score a an unconverted try for his team. Royal added 3 more points before half time as the star of the match, Josephian Peum Jayasinghe scored the first of his four tries. Dilip Rehan failed to add the extra points.At lemons the score read 16-10 in favour of the royalists.At the beginning of the second half royal extended their lead through their centre three quarter Damian Ratwatte and the try was converted by Arshard Jamaldeen. Royal scored two tries in quick succession and the last of their tries were scored by centre Tharaka Wijesooriya .At this stage Royal was in total control of the game 35-10. It was at this moment that Peum Jayasinghe surprised all Royalists when he crafted his way through using his nimble feet to its maximum effect as he scored three quick tries for the Joes. Royal defense was left dumbstruck as Peum had the perfect season opening.  Jamaldeen had a good kicking game as he put over another penalty for his team during the dying stages.Dilip Rehan for the Joes too had his kicking boots on as he converted three of the five tries. The Josephians had some positives to be taken off their 1st match of the season.
