Parliament is to take up this week two bills on changing the election laws regarding the local government bodies.
The legislation is aimed at introducing an electoral system that would be a mixture of the Proportional Representation (PR) and First Past the Post for local government elections.
The Local Authorities (Special Provisions) and Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Bill are scheduled to be taken up in parliament on Tuesday (5).
Chief Opposition Whip, John Amaratunge has told the media that the UNP has decided to support the proposed amendments.
The Bills were first presented to the House in October 2010.
