Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has said that the South Asian regional law enforcement agencies should take collective action to counter terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking and other transnational crimes in the region.
He was delivering the keynote address at the Ninth conference of the Police Chiefs of SAARC countries. He said if these critical matters are well tackled the people will be able to witness political freedom, social feeling and economic development. The Defence Secretary said that of the challenges the region faced none had been more widespread and destructive than terrorism. In Sri Lanka’s context human and economic costs had been enormous. He said other member states too had suffered equal or perhaps even greater harm from terrorism.
