500 more buses will be added to strengthen the fleet of the Sri Lanka Transport Board. The first 100 buses were introduced to service today.
Minister Kumara Welgama said his intention was not for the SLTB to be a burden for others. Their intention was to provide all these 500 buses to depots which has a good operation system and also which pay salaries for the workers. He pointed out that 7500 buses should ply on roads. This is a big challenge. At present only 5000 buses are operating. This is not a journey in which he could traverse alone. He requested the workers to support him in achieving this goal.
The Minister was speaking after vesting these buses in the public. In addition, the Minister patronized in the introduction to service discarded buses which had been repaired. The ceremony was held in Narahenpita today. Chairman of the Transport Commission Shashie Welgama and SLTB Chairman M.D. Bandusena were among those present.
