Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has said that the Government’s aim is to craft a positive political environment for the building of a Sri Lankan generation sans differences. The Prime Minister was speaking during a debate in Parliament on the Local Authorities Special Provisions, Elections (Amendment) and Elections (Special Provisions) Bills.
The Prime Minister told the House that the opposition, government group and the people expected the electoral system and eliminate chaos. This, he emphasized, will enable the elected representative to work along with the people of his area. As such he described this as a prudent decision taken collectively by both sides. This he added will enable to build a better political environment.
The Elections (Special Provisions) Bill was approved with amendments while the Census (Amendment) Bill was approved without amendments. The debate on the Local Authorities (Special Provisions) and the Local Authorities Elections Bills was postponed.
