Debate scheduled in SC for private school choice

Apr 6, 2011 4:09:00 AM - thestate.com
South Carolina legislators are considering bills that would use tax credits to help parents send their children to private school.

House and Senate subcommittees will debate identical legislation Wednesday.

Republican Sen. Wes Hayes of Rock Hill says he expects senators to take a vote at his panel's third meeting on the issue.

The proposals would give tax credits to parents who can afford to pay tuition costs upfront. Poor parents could apply for scholarships. Businesses and residents who donate toward those scholarships would get the tax credit. Homeschoolers could also take a tax credit on the cost of instructional materials.

The idea has died repeatedly in the Republican-controlled Legislature since 2004. Advocates say they've addressed criticisms of earlier versions. Opponents say they're still against steering public dollars to private schools.
