Today is the third death anniversary of Former Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle.
No one can forget how the Former Minister, who stood for a unitary country and spoke against terrorism, strongly opposed the objectives of the terrorists, when the entire country was embroiled in a fear psychosis. On 06th April 2008, he visited the Weliveriya grounds knowing the threat posed from the terrorists. He did so may be because he considered the peoples service as noble. The Minister visited the grounds to flag off a marathon organized for the New Year. However, he became a victim of a suicide terrorist attack turning the entire country into grief. He was 55 years at the time of his death. He was an honest and talented Speaker. He did not consider caste, religious or other differences in when discharging his services.
Minister Fernandopulle, who was a lawyer, represented parliament from 1989 until the time of his death. During his long and illustrious political career he held a number of key Ministerial portfolios. He served as the Minister of Trade, Commerce, Consumer Affairs, Marketing Development and Irrigation at the time of his death. He was also the Chief government Whip and the Treasurer of the SLFP.
A commemorative ceremony to mark the third death Anniversary was held near the Jeyaraj Fernandopulle Memorial at Weliveriya this morning. Floral tributes were paid to the statue after the conduct of Buddhist and Christian religious services. Two minutes silence was observed in memory of those killed in the bomb attack. Sudharshani Fernandopulle, the wife of Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, his daughter and son, other family members and Parliamentarians were present on this occasion.
