A record income has been earned from Botanical Gardens in the island. Earnings last year reached 179 million rupees.
The Department for National Botanical Gardens said they expected the earnings at the end of this year to reach 300 million rupees. Its Director General Cyril Wijesundera said that the number of foreign visitors increased considerably, since his Department came under the purview of the Ministry of Economic Development. 64 million rupees had been earned from the Botanical Gardens in the first two months of this year alone. There had been over 169 local visitors for the Peradeniya, Haggala and Gampaha Botanical Gardens within the last two months. The Director General said this was a considerable increase when compared with the corresponding period last year. The Economic Development Ministry had allocated 600 million rupees for the Department. Of this, 170 million rupees will be spent on the development of the Botanical Gardens at Mirijjawala in Hambantota. More Botanical Gardens are being developed.
