Manning Mayor Kevin Johnson will be the newest representative in South Carolina's State House.
The Item of Sumter reports that the Democrat won more than 52 percent of votes in a special election Tuesday for House District 64. Republican Sonny Sanders won 48 percent.
Johnson replaces the late Rep. Cathy Harvin, who died in December. A special election will now be held for Manning mayor.
Johnson defeated several candidates in the Democratic primary, including Alvin Greene. The unemployed veteran finished last among four candidates with less than 1 percent of the vote just eight months after he stunned the Democratic establishment by winning the party's primary for U.S. Senate.
